My 300 K Story by Jerry Kocur

This is my story leading to my intention toward owning a Chrysler 300 car. I got my driver’s license driving a 1950 Desoto coupe at the age of 16 years. Although our family car was a 1955 Lincoln Capri coupe, all our friends and relatives owned Chrysler product automobiles. During the 50’s my friends as well as I would study the Chrysler 300s and we would wish we could own such cars. Due to the performance and styling, in the spring of 1959 I ordered a white 1959 Plymouth Fury coupe with a 361 cubic inch motor. At the time 300s were costly compared to a Fury costing $3,675.00. I did a lot of drag racing in ’59 to ’61 in Rhode Island. Then, finally in 1963 I could afford a 300J, but Chrysler didn’t offer a convertible, but was going to offer a convertible in 1964. Then on January 24, 1964, I ordered my 300K convertible, which was delivered March 26, 1964. This vehicle has been the record holder as being the top Letter Car for most meets attended since the beginning of club meets. This car has been to 48 meets with the distance travelled of 75,000 miles (round trip included). Current mileage is 510,000.

Bill Elder writes:
At the 1996 meet in Chicago, Jerry Kocur was presented a special award, along with George Riehl and Gil Cunningham for 300s driven to the most meets. Jerry sadly passed away in 2017. He continued to drive his trusty 300K convert to another 17 meets for a total of 48. His final meet with the K was Mystic, Connecticut in the Spring of 2014 and at the time of his passing, his 300K had registered over 500,000 miles. In response to his Special Award, he made this note:

Over the past few years many Chrysler 300 Club members have asked me if I know how many miles I have travelled in my 300K to Chrysler 300 Meets. I attended my first meet in Pocono, PA in 1977. Since then, I have attended 31 meets with my 1964 Chrysler 300K convertible. I used a different vehicle once – the rear seals were leaking and the hour was late, therefore I drove my 1973 white Dodge Challenger to the Spring 1993 Philadelphia meet.

Including the recent Chicago meet, I calculate the total mileage traveled to and from meets to be 42,000 miles plus 5,000 additional miles attending various functions in the meet towns as well as finding my way after becoming lost!

Sincerely, Jerry Kocur
