I have been trying to remove the brown stains from the headliner in the J. Nothing worked. The best solution is to replace the headliner. While we await SMS’s glacial paced delivery of the new headliner, I tried a “plan B”. Plan B is inelegant but easy. My headliner is alabaster color. I remembered that I had some alabaster Leatherique left over from the ‘63 Imperial that sailed to Finland. And the headliner is vinyl, not fabric; so I thought some careful redying of the brown stains might work. Well, it turned out that my alabaster Leatherique was an EXACT match to the original, unfaded headliner color. While it is not an exact match to the somewhat faded exposed headliner, it is close enough. I used it very sparingly, so as to not clog the perforations in the headliner. To my amazement, it turned out better than I thought it would. Not perfect, but acceptable for now. See the “before” and “after” photos below.

Restoration Product Spot Light

In celebration of the anniversary of the 64 300K we would like to make our members aware that our friends at SMS reproduce the 64 300K door panels correctly.
You must send in the metal top core of the panel along with the chrome trim and the star emblem. It is also highly recommended that you order the inner belt weather strip kit (Cats Whiskers) from Restoration Specialties in Windbar, PA. This kit contains all eight whiskers, both inner and outers’ to seal up the glass area of the door. The Restoration part numbers are, 990906 for the hard top, and 990905 for the convertible. You will then just send the four inner whisker parts to SMS, along with your metal top cores and trim, while you install the outer door glass whiskers on your doors. I would also recommend that you polish up the chrome before you send the parts. This way the team at SMS will professionally install your freshly polished shinny trim, and the new upper Cats Whiskers. For those of you that have inspected the upper inner Cats Whiskers you have found that they are stapled on, again SMS will properly staple them to the new panels for a correct factory appearance. If your metal top cores are damaged, or rusted, good used cores can be had from Murray Park and he will gladly drop ship them to SMS.
