Gas Tank Sending Unit

I've been working on a G and having a tough time with the new gas tank senders. I've tried several. I install a sender and it reads E no matter how much fuel I add to the tank. The floats are OK. The sender wire is fine. I have a good ground, sender reads correctly on bench.

I determined the float arm is not raising up on its own. I tied a long wire around the float, long enough to go out of the sender hole in the tank and installed into the tank. Then I could hold the sender and gently pull the wire to get the arm to raise. Doing this I get valid readings. Otherwise, the arm just doesn’t raise and the gauge reads E.

Look at the lever arm distance on the old unit compared to the new. It is something like 8” vs ~5” = a 35 to 40% difference.

I was able to repair the original sender and I did not use the new senders.
