During the past year, many members have questioned
the originality of the transmissions in their 300 Letter Cars.
Sorry to say, only about 20% of these
transmissions that are presently in their 300s are correct. Through
the years the transmission had been exchanged for a Plymouth, Dodge,
Imperial and regular Chrysler core.
I cannot say this has been
deliberate, but one must realize that in the early years, many shops
or individuals were unaware that 300 transmissions were “special”
even though the outward physical appearance was the same. Even the
interchange books showed that one could be exchanged for the other.
If you wish to check to see if your
Powerflite or Torqueflite is the correct one for your 300, the
following list will help you. These numbers have been obtained from
Chrysler parts books and some I have verified on my own 300s and
found that some of mine are Imperials, New Yorkers, and Plymouths.
But luckily, these are my spare units.
The transmission part
number is located on the lower right side
(passenger side) right above the pan on a machined off area. The
transmission case number
is located halfway up the main transmission case on the left side
(driver’s side).
