US Citizen Requirements to Enter Canada (see below for New York State, Michigan, Minnesota, Vermont, or Washington State residents)

To enter Canada as a U.S. citizen, you'll generally need a valid U.S. passport or passport card. If flying, you may also need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)Children under 16 may only need proof of U.S. citizenship. 

Elaboration:

A valid U.S. passport is the primary document required for entry into Canada for U.S. citizens. 

A valid U.S. passport card is also acceptable for land and sea entries. 

U.S. citizens who are eligible for a NEXUS card can use it for expedited border crossings. 

If flying, U.S. citizens typically need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) in addition to their passport, which can be obtained online. 



Requirements to Enter Canada if you are a resident of New York State, Michigan, Minnesota, Vermont, or Washington State

To enter Canada as a New York State, Michigan, Minnesota, Vermont, or Washington State citizen, you'll need a valid U.S. passport, passport card, or an enhanced driver's license (issued in New York, Michigan, Minnesota, Vermont, or Washington). You can also use a valid NEXUS card. Children under 16 may only need proof of U.S. citizenship.  You may enter Canada from New York State if you have an enhanced license from any of the other four named states.

Check with your carrier. Generally you can extend your US coverage to Canada with just a phone call. Some insurance companies give you an additional insurance card to carry for coverage in Canada.
