Horn Ground Alternate Idea

by Bill Elder

Although I am not sure when this system was discontinued, it is a good bet that your Letter Car grounds the horn switch through the steering column shaft. We have several web pages on the system, see Horn Problems.

I had a horn ground problem and did not want to disassemble the steering column to fix it so I had this idea.

If I could come up with something that touched the steering shaft to make ground, I might be able to save a lot of time. I found one of those door switches, those spring loaded things that every door has to turn on the interior lights. I drilled a hole in the steering column jacket and screwed this in so the spring loaded head touched and stayed in contact with the steering shaft. Then I connected a ground wire to the switch body, ran it to a convenient ground, and the problem was solved. Here are some pictures.
